Eric R. Spangenberg is a Professor of Marketing and Psychology & Social Behavior at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine. He previously served as Dean of the Merage School from 2014–2020 and Dean of the Carson College of Business at Washington State University (2005–2014). His academic career spans over 30 years, with a focus on consumer behavior, environmental psychology, and brand extended self-construal. He holds a PhD from the University of Washington (1990).
His research explores topics like question-behavior effects, consumer skepticism toward advertising, and the impact of sensory cues (e.g., scent, music) in retail environments. His work has been featured in The Economist, Wall Street Journal, and other major media. He is an active AACSB Board member and has led strategic initiatives at both the Merage School and Carson College, including curriculum development and fundraising campaigns raising over $75 million.
Spangenberg’s international engagements include Fulbright roles in France/Germany and a visiting faculty position at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. His leadership emphasizes academic innovation, global partnerships, and enhancing business education accessibility through online programs.
