Eric Olson

Dr. Eric Olson is a distinguished Professor and academic leader at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he founded the Department of Molecular Biology and directs the Center for Regenerative Science and Medicine and the Wellstone Center for Muscular Dystrophy Research. He holds prestigious chairs, including the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair and the Annie and Willie Nelson Professorship in Stem Cell Research.

Education: B.A. in Chemistry and Biology (Wake Forest University), Ph.D. in Biochemistry (Wake Forest University), postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine.

Research focuses on cardiac and muscle development, organ regeneration, and muscular dystrophy. His work includes discovering key transcription factors for heart and muscle development, elucidating signaling pathways in heart failure, and advancing therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases. Over 600 publications with an h-index of 161 reflect his impactful contributions.

Notable honors include the American Heart Association’s Basic Research Prize, Pasarow Award, and recognition by the French Academy of Sciences. He co-founded biotech companies to translate research into therapies and is a 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient from Wake Forest Chemistry.

Advising and mentorship have produced three National Academy of Science members and HHMI appointees. His interdisciplinary approach bridges developmental biology and clinical medicine, fostering innovation in regenerative therapies. Beyond academia, he plays in the rock band 'The Transactivators.'
