Lee Sweeney

Dr. Lee Sweeney is a Professor and Director of the Myology Institute at the University of Florida. He holds the Thomas H. Maren Eminent Scholar Chair and leads a NIH-funded Paul Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Center. His research focuses on molecular motors (myosins) and translational therapies for muscle diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). He pioneered the nonsense suppression drug ataluren (PTC124) and developed gene therapy approaches to combat muscle wasting. Notable awards include the Hamdan Award (2008) and induction into Esquire’s “Best and Brightest” (2004). He advises the World Anti-Doping Agency on genetic enhancement ethics.
