Charles P Emerson Jr

Charles P Emerson Jr is Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and Neurology at University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMass Chan Medical School), where he serves as Director of the Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Program. His academic appointments include positions in the T.H. Chan School of Medicine Department of Neurology (Division Wellstone Program), Department of NeuroNexus Institute, and Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Department of Neuroscience.

Dr. Emerson received his undergraduate education at Princeton University in Biology/Biochemistry and his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in Biology. His academic career includes faculty positions at the University of Virginia (where he advanced to Commonwealth Professor of Biology), Fox Chase Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (as Joseph Leidy Professor and Chair of Cell and Developmental Biology), and Boston Biomedical Research Institute. He joined UMass Chan Medical School in 2013.

The Emerson Lab investigates skeletal muscle development, regeneration and disease with a focus on transcriptional networks and signaling pathways controlling skeletal muscle progenitors. Current research utilizes genome, molecular and stem cell technologies to understand muscle development in embryos and muscle repair in adults, with particular emphasis on human muscle biology and muscular dystrophies. The lab has pioneered iPSC modeling of human skeletal myogenesis and muscular dystrophy, developing innovative approaches for investigating genetic and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms.

Analysis of Dr. Emerson's recent publications reveals a strong focus on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) and limb girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD), particularly using CRISPR gene editing, RNA therapeutics, and stem cell approaches. His work integrates molecular biology, stem cell technology, and disease modeling to develop novel therapeutic strategies for muscular dystrophies.

Dr. Emerson's research has been generously supported by the NIH, including Career Development and Merit Awards, and directorship of an NIH Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center. He has led NIH graduate and postdoctoral training programs in cell and developmental biology and has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows throughout his career.

The Emerson Lab operates within the UMass Chan Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center, maintaining highly collaborative relationships with academic and industry scientists, clinicians, and patient advocates. The lab has developed innovative human stem cell models, particularly iPSC technologies, to investigate skeletal muscle development and disease mechanisms, with ongoing projects focused on CRISPR gene correction, RNA therapeutics, and small molecule development for muscular dystrophies.
