University of Massachusetts Chan Medical Schoolمعرفی
Oliver D. King is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, where he leads research in computational biology focused on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). He also holds appointments in the NeuroNexus Institute and the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Department of Neuroscience, contributing to the institution's Wellstone Program dedicated to muscular dystrophy research.
Dr. King received his BA in Mathematics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, followed by an MS in Computer Sciences and a PhD in Mathematics, both from the University of California, Berkeley. His academic journey included postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and the Whitehead Institute before joining the Boston Biomedical Research Institute as a Scientist. He transitioned to academia at UMass Chan Medical School in 2013, first in Cell and Developmental Biology before moving to Neurology in 2016.
As a computational biologist, Dr. King specializes in algorithm development and high-throughput data analysis with a primary focus on FSHD. His research investigates transcriptional and epigenetic changes associated with the disease, genetic modifiers of severity, and therapeutic approaches targeting the DUX4 gene. He has developed several computational tools including PLAAC for identifying proteins with prion-like domains, D4Z4caster for FSHD analysis, and RFF for behavioral analysis in animal models.
Analysis of Dr. King's publication record reveals a strong interdisciplinary approach that bridges mathematics, computer science, and biomedical research. His work spans computational biology, molecular genetics, and neuroscience, with significant contributions to understanding prion-like domains in neurodegenerative diseases and developing gene therapy approaches for muscular dystrophies. His recent publications demonstrate increasing focus on translational applications of computational findings to therapeutic development.
Dr. King leads a multidisciplinary research team within the Wellstone Program at UMass Chan Medical School. His laboratory combines computational approaches with experimental validation, bringing together expertise in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and clinical research to advance understanding of FSHD pathogenesis and develop targeted interventions for this complex neuromuscular disorder.
