Eric Oliver is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University, affiliated with the Faculty of Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Dalhousie University, following degrees from Acadia University and the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on physical oceanography, climate science, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge with scientific approaches. Key areas include marine heatwaves, climate variability, and the influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on ocean dynamics. Oliver collaborates with Inuit communities to explore traditional knowledge of weather, ice, and coastal systems, emphasizing co-produced research for sustainable futures. His work has advanced understanding of climate extremes, Arctic sea ice dynamics, and model validation, with contributions to global marine heatwave frameworks and policy-relevant analyses. Recent projects involve coupled ocean-ice-biogeochemical modeling in the northwest Atlantic and Labrador Sea carbon dynamics.
Education: B.Sc. (Physics and Mathematics, Acadia University), M.Sc. (Physics, University of Ottawa), Ph.D. (Physical Oceanography, Dalhousie University). Research spans climate change impacts, extreme events, and interdisciplinary methods combining Indigenous perspectives. His publications address marine heatwave drivers, Arctic environmental shifts, and statistical forecasting of cyclones. Oliver’s contributions include co-editing marine heatwave methodologies and developing downscaled climate projections for coastal regions.
