Talley specializes in the intersection of corporate law, governance, and finance through empirical and experimental methodologies. His research examines corporate inversions, financial regulation (including LIBOR litigation), social entrepreneurship structures, judicial decision-making diversity, and machine learning applications in contract law. He pioneers quantitative approaches to legal problems, blending economic theory with real-world data analysis to address regulatory challenges and corporate governance failures. His work consistently bridges theoretical frameworks with practical implications for policymakers and corporate boards.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals dominant trends in experimental law and economics methodology applied to corporate finance regulation, with increasing focus on computational approaches (machine learning in contract analysis) and hybrid organizational forms (social entrepreneurship). His scholarship demonstrates consistent engagement with high-impact legal issues including post-crisis financial regulation, corporate governance reforms, and judicial behavior.
Scientific recognition includes:
- 2022 Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Columbia Law School)
Talley co-directed Berkeley's Center for Law, Business and the Economy (2006-2014), served on UC Berkeley's Budget Committee (2011-2014, chair 2013-2014), and held leadership roles in the American Law and Economics Association and Society for Empirical Legal Studies (co-president 2013-2014). He maintains active industry engagement as a frequent commentator for national media and consultant to corporate boards on fiduciary duties and governance matters.
At Columbia, he contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives as a Cybersecurity Affiliated Member, Computational Social Science Committee member, and Education Affiliated Member, demonstrating commitment to cross-disciplinary legal scholarship.
