Dr. Eric Huizinga is an Assistant Professor and Programme Director in the Department of Biomolecular Sciences at Utrecht University, within the Faculty of Science. He specializes in Structural Biochemistry, focusing on the structural basis of blood platelet adhesion mediated by von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and the mechanisms of viral infections, particularly involving coronaviruses. His research integrates structural biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to understand disease mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions.
His work includes collaborations with the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Laboratory at UMC Utrecht and other institutions. Key research areas involve the structural analysis of VWF-collagen interactions and the evolution of coronavirus receptor-binding proteins. Dr. Huizinga has contributed to understanding the molecular basis of blood clotting disorders and viral pathogenesis.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as Introduction to Biophysics and Molecular Imaging and Membranes & Metabolism. He advises students in the Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences program and leads the Structural Biochemistry research group.
