Eric Bjorkstedt is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Fisheries Biology at Cal Poly Humboldt, where he conducts research on marine ecosystems and fisheries management. Based at the Telonicher Marine Laboratory (Room 116A), he maintains an active research program focused on understanding how ocean dynamics influence marine populations, particularly in the California Current system.
Dr. Bjorkstedt earned his Honors B.A. in Biological Sciences and English from the University of Delaware (1992) followed by a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University (1998). His interdisciplinary background bridges biological sciences with humanities, providing a unique perspective on marine ecosystem research.
As a fisheries oceanographer, his research examines oceanographic and ecological factors affecting ecosystem productivity and fish recruitment processes, with particular focus on rockfishes and salmon. His work integrates ship-based surveys, laboratory experiments, remote sensing, fisheries data, and quantitative modeling to address conservation challenges in a changing ocean environment. Recent publications (2023-2024) demonstrate continued productivity in areas including environmental DNA applications, physiological responses to ocean acidification, and individual-based modeling of marine species.
Dr. Bjorkstedt has mentored numerous graduate students, with recent theses completed in 2023 on topics ranging from harmful algal bloom detection to eDNA applications in stream ecosystems. His students have investigated diverse aspects of marine ecology, including krill population dynamics, ichthyoplankton responses to climate variability, and rockfish physiology under changing ocean conditions.
Based at the Telonicher Marine Laboratory, Dr. Bjorkstedt collaborates with researchers across multiple institutions and contributes to large-scale monitoring efforts like the "State of the California Current" reports. His work provides critical insights for fisheries management in the Pacific region as ocean conditions continue to change.
