Evgeny Pakhomov is a Professor at the University of British Columbia with dual appointments at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. He directs the Marine Zooplankton and Micronekton Laboratory and previously served as Director of the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (2016-2021). His educational background includes an M.Sc. from Kazan State University (1983) and Ph.D. from P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (1992), followed by postdoctoral work at Rhodes University.
Research interests focus on biological oceanography with emphasis on:
- Zooplankton-fish ecological interactions and food web dynamics
- Stable isotope applications in marine ecology
- Climate change impacts on polar and temperate ecosystems
- Land-sea interface processes and invasive species ecology
Publication analysis reveals strong focus on pelagic ecosystems, with themes including Antarctic krill-salp dynamics, carbon sequestration by zooplankton, climate adaptation mechanisms, and ecosystem modeling. Recent work addresses microplastic pollution impacts and innovative culturing techniques for gelatinous zooplankton.
Honors include the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship. Current research team consists of 2 postdoctoral fellows and 4 graduate students. Major projects involve NSERC-funded initiatives on Pacific herring ecosystem roles, salmon resilience, and coastal ecosystem services.
