Yevhenii Pakhomov is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries. He holds a Ph.D. from the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology and has extensive experience in biological oceanography, focusing on zooplankton ecology, Antarctic ecosystems, and climate change impacts. His research integrates field studies, stable isotope analysis, and ecosystem modeling to understand marine food web dynamics, carbon cycling, and species invasions.
Education:
- M.Sc., Kazan State University, Russia (1983)
- Ph.D., P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences (1992)
- Post-doctoral work at Rhodes University, South Africa (1993–1996)
Research Interests:
- Mesopelagic and Southern Ocean food webs
- Zooplankton biodiversity and biomass estimation
- Stable isotope applications in marine ecology
- Climate change effects on marine ecosystems
- Invasive species ecology
- Salmon early life history and migration
Key Projects:
- Midwater food webs (global comparisons of mesopelagic communities)
- Rivers Inlet Ecosystem Study (sockeye salmon ecology)
- Antarctic krill and salp biology
- Ecosystem modeling of the Prince Edward Islands and Chatham Rise
- Microplastic impacts on Galápagos penguins
Advising: Supervised over 20 doctoral and master's students, focusing on zooplankton dynamics, salmon migration, invasive species, and ecosystem modeling. Notable students include Alexis Bahl (Salp vertical migration studies) and others examining copepod ecology and microplastic bioaccumulation.
Labs/Teams: Leads research groups on midwater ecology and salmon resilience, collaborating with institutions globally, including the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NZ) and the University of New South Wales (Australia).
