Eric Armstrong is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre, Dance & Performance at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. He holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from York University, with additional training from institutions like The Drama Studio in London, UK. His expertise spans accent/dialect coaching, voice and speech training, and textual analysis for actors. Armstrong has coached for major theatre productions, films (e.g., The Expanse), and television, working with actors like Iain Glen and Michelle Williams.
His research focuses on culturally sensitive dialect practices, phonetics pedagogy, and the intersection of language and performance identity. Notable publications include works on Indigenous accent training, Shakespearean text analysis, and hybrid dialects. Armstrong has been honored with the 2022 Senior Teaching Award, Dudley Knight Award for vocal scholarship, and VASTA Leadership Award. He also serves as a Senior Editor for The International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA). Key contributions include developing educational tools like the Lexical Sets for Actors eBook and iOS IPA keyboards.
Armstrong has taught for over 30 years at institutions in Toronto, Windsor, Boston, and Chicago. His professional affiliations include the National Voice Association (Canada) and VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association). He advocates for equitable dialect representation, particularly for underrepresented groups in performance.
