Erhard Hinrichs

Professor Erhard Hinrichs serves as Full Professor for General and Computational Linguistics at the University of Tübingen's Department of Linguistics (Seminar für Sprachwissenschaft), a position he has held since 1991. He also holds a concurrent appointment as Senior Researcher at the Leibniz Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim since 2019.

His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Linguistics from The Ohio State University (1985), where he previously served as Visiting Professor from 1997-2016. His research focuses on computational linguistics infrastructure, with particular expertise in language resource sustainability, corpus-based semantic composition, and lexical-semantic modeling.

Hinrichs leads major international research infrastructure projects including CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure), CLARIAH-DE, and the Center for Sustainability of Linguistic Data (NaLiDa). His work demonstrates consistent funding from prestigious sources including the European Commission, German Ministry of Education and Research, and German Science Foundation.

As administrator, he served as Vice Dean of Research at Tübingen (2004-2010) and Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages (1996-1997). His methodological approach emphasizes the long-term preservation of linguistic data, persistent identifiers, and metadata standards like CMDI for language resources.
