Enlli Thomas is Professor of Education Research and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Bangor University, where she leads the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She has been a Visiting Professor at Umeå University, Sweden since 2018. Her research examines psycholinguistic aspects of bilingual language acquisition, bilingual assessment methodologies, and educational approaches to language transmission.
Her research interests focus on:
- Psycholinguistic mechanisms in bilingual language development
- Cognitive effects of bilingualism across the lifespan
- Socio-economic influences on language acquisition
- Welsh language education policy and assessment
- Executive function in bilingual individuals
- Language transmission in minority language contexts
Her recent publications demonstrate strong focus on bilingual education policy, Welsh language acquisition, and cognitive aspects of bilingualism, with consistent attention to educational applications in Welsh-medium settings.
She has received significant recognition including:
- 2019 Learned Society of Wales Hugh Owen Medal for outstanding educational research
Professor Thomas supervises MA and PhD students and has secured numerous research grants including:
- ESRC/AHRC CorCenCC National Welsh Corpus (£1.8 million)
- Welsh Government projects on COVID-19's impact on Welsh-medium education
- ESRC study on bilingualism as protective factor in neurodegenerative disorders
- Development of standardized Welsh language assessment tools
She leads research teams including the CorCenCC corpus project and develops pedagogical toolkits for Welsh schools. She serves on editorial boards for multiple linguistics journals and regularly advises government agencies on language policy.
