Emmanuel Wiertz

Emmanuel Wiertz is a Full Professor of Medical Microbiology specializing in Experimental Virology at Utrecht University Medical Center (UMC Utrecht), leading research within the Strategic Program Infection & Immunity. His work focuses on molecular mechanisms of virus-host interactions and antiviral strategies.

His academic journey includes a Veterinary Medicine degree (1986) and PhD cum laude (1993) from Utrecht University, followed by immunology training at the Weizmann Institute and as an EMBO fellow at MIT under Prof. Hidde Ploegh (1994-1996).

Wiertz's research examines viral immune evasion tactics, particularly how herpesviruses (HSV, HCMV) degrade host immune molecules like HLA class I. His lab investigates ER-associated degradation pathways in viral pathogenesis and autoimmunity, while developing CRISPR-based antiviral approaches and broad-spectrum peptide inhibitors targeting viral envelopes.
