Rommel Mathias is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Monash University, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. His research focuses on the pathogenesis of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), particularly the mechanisms of viral assembly, egress, and host organelle remodelling. He employs a multidisciplinary approach combining virology, molecular biology, proteomics, and bioinformatics to elucidate critical host-viral interactions and viral strategies for immune evasion.
- Research Interests: HCMV latency and reactivation, antiviral therapeutic targets, host-pathogen interactions, and molecular mechanisms of viral egress.
- Grants:
- Blocking Human Cytomegalovirus: Targeting Host Organelle Remodelling and the Viral Assembly Complex (NHMRC, 2016–2018)
- Sirtuins and Pathogenesis of Human Cytomegalovirus (NHMRC, 2012–2016)
- Labs/Teams: Leads the Viral Pathogenesis and Host Cellular Defense Group, collaborating internationally on HCMV research and bacterial pathogenesis.
