Donald Mark Coen, Ph.D. is a Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of herpesvirus replication and latency, with a particular emphasis on herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV).
- Investigates viral microRNAs and their role in latency maintenance
- Studies structural biology of herpesvirus DNA replication proteins
- Develops antiviral therapies targeting nuclear egress mechanisms
The lab has recently transitioned to a closed status while continuing manuscript preparation and reagent support. Collaborations with the Hogle, Abraham, and Arthanari labs have been instrumental in structural studies and drug mechanism analyses.
Recent publications highlight advancements in:
- Small molecule targeting of HCMV nuclear egress
- MiR-9 mediated HSV-1 latency mechanisms
- DNA polymerase structural insights for drug resistance
- Nuclear egress complex phosphorylation studies
- Chemical genetic approaches to drug development
Research foci include post-transcriptional regulation, replication protein functional dissection, and novel antiviral targets through chemical genetics and biophysical approaches.
Despite no current positions available, the lab maintains its legacy through ongoing manuscript work and resource sharing.
