Giorgio Gribaudo is a Full Professor at the University of Turin's Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology, where he serves as Head of the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology (LMV). He earned his Biology degree from the University of Turin in 1982 and completed his PhD in Microbiology at the same institution. His research focuses on three primary areas: characterization of host antiviral defenses, herpesvirus-host interactions, and development of novel antiviral compounds.
Research interests include:
- Molecular mechanisms of herpesvirus-host interactions (HCMV, HSV)
- Development of broad-spectrum antiviral agents targeting respiratory viruses
- Viral immune evasion strategies and calcium homeostasis modulation
- Environmental microbiology and microbial evolution
His publications demonstrate strong focus on:
- Viroporin functions in cytomegalovirus pathogenesis
- DHODH inhibitors as broad-spectrum antivirals
- Phytochemical antiviral agents
- Repurposed therapeutics against viral targets
Professor Gribaudo currently advises six graduate students:
- Beatrice Valentini (PhD, Sustainable Development)
- Marta Pavan (PhD, Biomolecular Sciences)
- Davide Bongiovanni (PhD, Sustainable Development)
- Silvia Abbà (PhD, Sustainable Development)
- Arianna Maggiora (Postgraduate)
- Greta Spagnoli (Postgraduate)
He leads the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology team including Associate Professor Anna Luganini, Researcher Irene Stefanini, and technician Giulia Sibille. The lab investigates virus-host interactions using molecular genetics, proteomics, and cell biology approaches.
