Dr. Emma Whittaker is an Associate Lecturer at the School of Art, Design and Architecture within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business at the University of Plymouth. Her work focuses on sustainable design, creative industries, and climate action, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals. She leads initiatives like the Green Maker Initiative and co-authored The Net Zero Visions Book (2022) and The Green Maker Initiative Book (2023). She has won the New Media Writing Prize 2017 for her creative project The Cartographer's Confession.
Her research integrates narrative theory, immersive experiences, and environmental ethics, with publications in Oxford University Press, Leonardo, and others. She collaborates with organizations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Arts Council England. Teaching roles include supervision of dissertations in Graphic Design and Media Arts, with qualifications including a PGCE in Art & Design and a University of Plymouth Teaching Fellowship (2011–12).
As a designer-maker, she focuses on ethical gemstones and recycled metals through Expanded Skies. She co-designed the Creative Commissions Programme and contributed to Plymouth City Council’s Green Minds project. Her interdisciplinary work bridges art, technology, and sustainability.
