Emma Whewell

Emma Whewell is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the Faculty of Business and Law, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), where she has been a member of the Law department since 1998. She teaches Civil Litigation, Family Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Legal Skills, and Professional Ethics across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the Legal Practice Course and Professional Skills Course.

Her research focuses on Family Law and the Family Justice System, with a particular emphasis on access to justice and alternative dispute resolution. She has conducted empirical research in Children's Social Care, especially during the 'pre-proceedings' stage, and is actively involved in public and professional engagement in family justice reform.

Emma Whewell is a qualified Solicitor (admitted 1992), practiced law part-time until 2001, and became an accredited Mediator in 2017. She has served as an External Examiner for BPP Law School (2010–2014) and is a member of the Local Family Justice Board in Bristol since 2018, contributing to the creation of the Domestic Abuse Advisory Group and a Court Guide for abuse survivors.

She has co-organized and participated in over 10 professional conferences and public debates at the Bristol Family Court since 2015 and has played a key role in organizing annual LFJB conferences. Her work bridges academic scholarship, clinical legal education through the Business & Law Clinic, and real-world policy impact.
