Dr. Emma Tebbs is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and Earth Observation at King’s College London’s Department of Geography, part of the School of Global Affairs. Her research focuses on applying Earth observation technologies to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, particularly in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of Africa. She leads the King’s Earth Observation and Environmental Sensing Hub and co-chairs the GEO AquaWatch Steering Committee. Recent projects include studying hydropower dams’ environmental impacts in Ethiopia, satellite soil moisture applications, and invasive species mapping via ESA’s Floating Weed Manager project.
Her research interests span remote sensing of lakes, rivers, and catchments, field spectroscopy, ecohydrology, and sustainable resource management. She has a PhD from the University of Leicester (2014) on East African Rift Lakes, and prior experience at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (2013–2015).
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on environmental remote sensing, sustainability, and spatial data science, plus postgraduate modules on Earth observation for sustainability. She supervises PhD students applying remote sensing to ecological questions, such as cyanobacteria blooms and invasive species monitoring.
Her work bridges environmental science and policy, addressing global challenges like water security and biodiversity loss. Key contributions include developing novel satellite-based tools like LAQUA for lake quality assessment and the RESET tool for coral reef stress monitoring.
