Mark Cutler is a Professor of Physical Geography at Energy Environment and Society, specializing in Earth Observation techniques to address UN Sustainable Development Goals. His research focuses on monitoring terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems using hyperspectral and hyperspatial sensors, particularly in SE Asian forests and Eastern African landscapes. He leads projects like the GloboLakes initiative, mapping over 1,000 global lakes, and UK Space Agency-funded work on human trafficking detection via satellite data. Teaching includes Biogeography, Remote Sensing, and fieldwork for undergraduates, alongside MSc modules on forest restoration and sustainability.
Key research interests span Remote Sensing applications, tropical forest dynamics, climate change impacts, and ecosystem restoration. Notable projects include analyzing forest responses to El Niño droughts and studying displaced peoples' environmental impacts. His work integrates satellite data with catchment properties to inform environmental policy and conservation efforts.
Recent publications explore liana detection in forests, lake eutrophication patterns, and carbon sequestration potential in degraded tropical regions. He collaborates internationally, contributing to policy-relevant studies and interdisciplinary teams. Supervision of 12 research projects underscores his commitment to advancing environmental science through innovative methodologies.
