Emma Louise Giles is a Professor of Integrating Physical and Mental Health at Teesside University's School of Health and Life Sciences. She holds roles as a peer reviewer for high-impact journals, including Journal of the American Medical Association and BMC Public Health, and is Associate Editor for BMC Public Health and PLOS ONE. She is a NIHR Research for Patient Benefit NE and Yorkshire Funding Reviewer Panel Member, and a member of UKRI's peer review college. Her research focuses on mental and physical health, food insecurity, and healthcare system design, with methodological expertise in qualitative research, systematic reviews, and co-production. She leads the NIHR Mental Health Leader Award-funded 'Mental Health Research Group' and has secured extensive funding for projects addressing food insecurity in mental health populations.
Education: PhD from Newcastle University (2010), BA(Hons) Marketing and Management (2005).
Research Interests: Food insecurity, diet-related chronic conditions, healthcare accessibility, behavioral interventions. Her work emphasizes co-production and peer research to improve health equity.
Awards: Fellowship of Advance HE, Membership by Distinction of the Faculty of Public Health.
Advising/Grants: Supervises numerous PhD students and has led over 30 projects, including NIHR-funded initiatives. Her contributions include developing interventions for obesity and mental health, and addressing disparities in cancer screening for vulnerable populations.
Lab/Teams: Co-leads NIHR Regional Research Delivery Network's Public Health Specialty Group and chairs the North East Obesity Forum.
