Emma Kirjavainen is a Researcher and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Art and Design, affiliated with the LUX (Lapland User Experience Design) discipline-specific doctoral programme and the Lapland User Experience Design research group. She also serves as a Project Manager within the Faculty. Her research focuses on human-robot interaction, user experience design, and museum technologies, with specializations in AI ethics, wearable technologies, and interactive systems.
Key projects include leading roles in EtKot (2025-2027), Arctic AI & Robotics (2024-2025), and Arctic Smart Future Technologies (2021-2023). These projects explore human-centered AI, robot design for public spaces, and sustainable technology solutions. Emma has organized workshops on empathy in human-robot interaction and museum service design.
Her research interests span museum exhibitions, quadruped robots, intentional communication systems, and user testing methodologies. Collaborations involve European Regional Development Fund projects and international conferences like MUM (Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia).
Emma has published 17 works since 2022, including peer-reviewed chapters and conference papers on emojis in chatbots, wearable provotypes, and AI in social robotics. She actively engages in exhibitions and workshop facilitation to bridge art, technology, and societal needs.
