Dr Emma Bielecki is a Senior Lecturer in 19th-Century French Studies at King's College London, part of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She holds a BA in English and French from the University of Oxford (2003), an MA in European History from UCL, and a PhD in French Studies from King's College London (2012). Prior to joining King's in 2018, she taught at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on intersections between French literature and cultural phenomena, including material culture, early cinema, and stage magic.
Her work explores themes such as detective fiction in the Belle Époque, 19th-century understandings of policing, and literary aesthetics. Key publications include The Collector in Nineteenth-Century French Literature (2012) and recent studies on dandyism and illusionism in French cultural history. She actively engages in public scholarship, contributing to outlets like The Conversation and appearing on radio discussions about French crime narratives.
Teaching responsibilities span undergraduate and MA levels, covering modern literature, critical theory, and translation. She is affiliated with King's research groups in Textual Representation and Visual Culture.
