Dr. Sarah Fuchs serves as Area Leader in History and Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music (RCM). Previously, she was an Assistant Professor of Music History & Cultures at Syracuse University, where she also directed the Digital Humanities program and undergraduate studies. She holds a PhD from the Eastman School of Music, alongside degrees from Ball State University and Taylor University.
Her research focuses on intersections of operatic culture, audio-visual media, and archival practices from the 19th century to the present. Current projects include a monograph on provincial performers in Third-Republic France and their use of emerging technologies. Her work has been supported by grants from the AAUW, Music & Letters Trust, and Harvard’s Houghton Library.
Awarded Syracuse University’s Meredith Teaching Recognition Award (2019), Fuchs has authored/co-authored studies on singers like Emma Calvé and Giovanni Battista Velluti, as well as articles on sound technologies and operatic listening practices. She supervises doctoral students such as Quoc Nguyen, whose research explores masculinity in French Belle Époque opera.
Her scholarly contributions span musicology, cultural history, and digital humanities, with publications in journals like Nineteenth-Century Music Review and Cambridge Opera Journal.
