Emma Bell is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Science Centre for Arts and Wellbeing. Her research focuses on Gothic literature/art, 19th-century cultural studies, Roma/Traveller communities, and disability studies. She holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia (2007), an MA in Film and Philosophy (2002), and a BA in English Literature (2000).
Her work explores intersections between art, media, and marginalized identities, including analyses of mental health representation and class politics. Recent publications include studies on Marxism in children's literature, maternal themes in Frankenstein, and cultural stereotypes in reality TV. She has served as an External Examiner at the University of Portsmouth (2015–2020).
Her research activities span film philosophy, media ethics, and critical theory. She co-organized the 'Film as Philosophy: The Festival' event and contributed to editorial work for Sage. Her publications reflect interdisciplinary approaches to art, literature, and social justice themes.
