Dr Emma Withers is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Art and Media, University of Brighton. Her research focuses on film studies, particularly science fiction and the intersections between technology, gender, sexuality, and digital culture. She holds a PhD from the University of Sussex (2017) and has published on topics such as virtual reality in Hollywood cinema and posthumanism in Claire Denis' genre films.

Research Interests: Emma examines how science fiction disrupts boundaries between human/technology, narrative/spectacle, and diegetic/non-diegetic elements. Her work engages with phenomenological and haptic approaches to spectatorship, AI, special effects, and identity representation in cinema.
Teaching & Supervision: She teaches Film & Screen Studies modules on theory, history, and industry practices. Supervision interests include science fiction/horror AI, posthumanism, gender studies, and narrative/spectacle dynamics.
Publications: Recent work includes analyses of Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days and ongoing projects on posthumanism in genre cinema.
