Professor Emily Sena is affiliated with the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and holds expertise in meta-science and translational medicine. Her research focuses on enhancing the validity, transparency, and reproducibility of preclinical research through systematic reviews and meta-analysis, particularly using animal models of human diseases like ischaemic stroke.

Emily's work addresses methodological challenges in preclinical research, including the development of tools for systematic reviews (e.g., SyRF website) and collaboration with publishers to refine reporting guidelines like ARRIVE. She also investigates the application of text mining and machine learning to accelerate evidence synthesis. Past research involved in vivo stroke modeling and co-founding the Multi-PART consortium for multi-centre preclinical stroke studies.
She has secured significant grants, including Horizon Europe (2023-2026) and Medical Research Council (2022-2025), and leads initiatives like the BMJ Open Science journal. Emily is deeply involved in institutional race equality efforts, co-founding the University of Edinburgh Race Equality Network and convening its sub-committee. She actively supervises PhD students and collaborates with organizations such as CAMARADES and NC3Rs.
