Lazaros Belbasis is a Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, funded by the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence. He holds an Associate Fellowship from Advance Higher Education for his teaching excellence. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of ischaemic stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, integrating proteomic and transcriptomic data. He also investigates environmental risk factors for neurological, cardiovascular, and pulmonary conditions through systematic reviews and Mendelian randomization studies.
Belbasis earned a Medical Degree and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Ioannina (Greece), followed by training as a General Practitioner. His doctoral work, supported by Hellenic Academy of Neuroimmunology and Greek State Scholarships Foundation, explored environmental contributors to neurological diseases. At Oxford, he received an Early Career Research Fellowship (2022) to advance multi-omics integration for neurodegenerative research.
His research portfolio includes over 30 peer-reviewed articles on topics like pandemic research quality, prediction model reproducibility, and umbrella reviews of epidemiological evidence. He systematically evaluates environmental and genetic risk factors for conditions ranging from multiple sclerosis to COPD, employing advanced statistical methodologies.
Belbasis teaches epidemiology and biostatistics to undergraduate/postgraduate students, emphasizing evidence synthesis and research integrity. His work bridges basic science discoveries with clinical translation, aiming to identify novel drug targets and improve disease prediction models.
