Emily Marker

Emily Marker is Associate Professor of European and Global History in the Department of History at Rutgers University–Camden. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is affiliated with the graduate faculty in New Brunswick, the Rutgers Center for African Studies, and the Center for European Studies. Her research centers on the entangled histories of empire, decolonization, and European identity formation.

Her research focuses on imperial and postcolonial Europe, francophone Africa, race, religion, youth, and global history. She explores how transnational youth programs after WWII shaped ideas of European belonging amid decolonization. Her interdisciplinary work bridges national histories and global processes, particularly in French and African contexts.

Dr. Marker’s scholarship engages with broad themes in global and transnational history. Her work demonstrates a strong trend in using micro-historical and personal narratives—such as her current family history project on Holocaust survivors—to interrogate macro-level processes like reparations and European integration.
