Emily Handsman is an incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Rutgers University. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University (2022) and has held roles as a Harvard College Fellow (2022-2023) and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Annenberg Institute for Education Reform (2023-2024). Her research focuses on K-12 schools, examining cultural, political, and organizational change, particularly equity efforts and their impact on educational systems.
Her current book project, Eras of Equity, analyzes equity initiatives in suburban school districts amid exogenous shocks. Other projects include studies on character education evolution and equity-centered mathematics education. She collaborates on a Wallace Foundation-funded project on equity-focused school leadership.
