Dr. Emily Guerry is a Stipendiary Lecturer in History at St Peter's College, University of Oxford. Previously, she served as a Senior Lecturer and co-Director of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) at the University of Kent. Her research explores the intersection of religious devotion and artistic representation in the Middle Ages, particularly focusing on relic veneration and its influence on Christian iconography. She has supervised 13 fully-funded PhD students, with 7已完成 and remains an external supervisor for 6 ongoing doctoral candidates at Kent.
Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Cambridge, a Junior Research Fellowship at Merton College, and a fellowship in Paris. She has contributed to major projects such as the AHRC-funded Illuminating the Past and the British Academy-supported Thomas Becket: Life, Death, and Legacy conference. Her work has been featured in media outlets like BBC History Magazine, BBC Radio, and international documentaries such as Mysteries of the Faith (Netflix, 2023).
Key research interests include the cultural history of relics like the Crown of Thorns, medieval stained glass art at Sainte-Chapelle, and the diplomatic role of Dominican friars. She is completing her first monograph, Crowning Paris (forthcoming 2025), which traces the relic’s journey from Jerusalem to Paris.
Her teaching spans British and European medieval history, historiography, and methodology. She actively engages in public scholarship through exhibitions, conferences, and media collaborations, emphasizing the accessibility of medieval art and history.
