Emily Freeman Brown is a Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities at Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts. She leads the Bowling Green Philharmonia and Opera Theater, and was named Professor of Creative Arts Excellence in 2016. Her work includes eight CDs on Albany Records, notable performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and collaborations with orchestras globally. She authored Dictionary for the Modern Conductor and published articles in BACH and Journal of the Conductors Guild.
Brown holds a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the Eastman School of Music and studied at the Royal College of Music in London, winning the Sir Adrian Boult Conducting Prize twice. She has conducted internationally with orchestras such as the Rochester Philharmonic, Latvian National Symphony, and Santiago-based ensembles. Her teaching roles include residencies at Boston University, University of North Texas, and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
As former President of the Conductors Guild and advisory board member, Brown advocates for contemporary music and educational outreach. Her recordings and performances emphasize new compositions, showcased in her New Music from Bowling Green series. She continues to mentor students and advance orchestral arts through global collaborations and pedagogical leadership.
