Emily Fairchild

Emily Fairchild is a Lecturer on Sociology and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She holds affiliations with the Department of Sociology and contributes to research clusters in Culture, Education and Society, and Gender and Family Inequality.

Her education includes a BS in Sociology, Psychology, and Philosophy from Purdue University, followed by MA and PhD in Sociology from Indiana University. She previously served as Associate Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at New College of Florida.

Research focuses on gender fluidity, inclusion in higher education, and intersectional identity dynamics. Current work examines gender-diverse student populations' interactional norms at liberal arts colleges, challenging traditional campus gender paradigms. Methodologically, she emphasizes qualitative ethnography to explore cultural and institutional gender dynamics.

Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate SOC 1128: Models of Social Science Research and graduate SOC 3305: Teaching Practicum. Her publications span gender representation in weddings, children's literature, and sports apparel, with forthcoming work in Queerness as Doing in Higher Education.
