Emily Cantrell

Emily Cantrell is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning & Culture at Texas A&M University. She serves as Co-Chair of the Advanced Literacy Studies Program, Director of the Reading Specialist Program, and Director of the Lohman Learning Community. Her research focuses on teacher preparation in evidence-based literacy instruction and the role of educators in addressing diverse student needs.

Educational Background: Dr. Cantrell holds a Ph.D., M.Ed., and B.S. in Education from Texas A&M University (2008, 2004, 2002). Her career includes teaching in rural Texas elementary schools and roles as a reading specialist and mentor for new teachers. She previously served as an Assistant Professor and Research Coordinator at the University of Hull, England.

Research Interests: Her work emphasizes teacher knowledge of literacy fundamentals, dyslexia interventions, and the implementation of reading science in classrooms. She advocates for rigorous teacher training to improve student outcomes, particularly in high-need and low-SES schools.

Grants & Leadership: Cantrell has led/co-led grants totaling $7.5M+ from the U.S. Department of Education and other bodies. Projects include MOOC-based professional development and literacy interventions for early learners. She is Co-PI on initiatives like the Catapult Round 4 Coding Literacy Project and a biometric literacy technology grant.

Editorial & Board Roles: She serves as Associate Editor for The Reading League Journal, and on editorial boards for Annals of Dyslexia and Education Sciences. She is a founding board member of the Center for Effective Reading Instruction and Vice President of her school board.
