Professor Blanchard's research focuses on international trade economics, with particular expertise in global value chains, trade policy, foreign direct investment, and the intersection of globalization with human capital development. Her work examines how global production networks reshape trade policy incentives, how trade shocks affect political outcomes, and how international trade patterns influence educational attainment and human capital formation. She employs both theoretical and empirical approaches to investigate these questions, often using detailed firm-level and country-level data to test hypotheses derived from economic models.
Her research has identified important connections between global value chain integration and trade policy formation, showing that countries with stronger GVC linkages tend to implement lower tariffs. She has also documented how trade wars can have significant political consequences, with evidence that the US-China trade war affected voting outcomes in the 2018 congressional elections. Her work on globalization and human capital demonstrates how the composition of exports influences educational attainment patterns across countries.
Professor Blanchard's scientific contributions have been recognized through numerous invitations to present her research to policymakers and academic audiences worldwide. Her policy-relevant work has informed discussions at the World Trade Organization, the U.S. Department of State, and other international institutions.
Her professional service includes editorial board memberships for the Journal of International Economics (2018-2022), Review of World Economics (2016-present), Economics and Politics (2017-2021), and World Trade Review (2017-present). She is also a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (2017-present) and the CES Ifo Research Network (2020-present).
Professor Blanchard teaches courses on global economics, international trade, and the intersection of business, government, and trade policy at Tuck School of Business. She has also taught at the London School of Economics Executive Masters program and previously at the University of Virginia. Her teaching emphasizes the practical applications of economic theory to contemporary global business challenges, with a focus on how firms navigate complex international trade environments.
Her media presence is substantial, with frequent appearances in major news outlets including The New York Times, NPR, MSNBC, Bloomberg, and Marketplace, where she provides expert commentary on trade policy, globalization, and international economic developments.
