Emily Bernard is the Julian Lindsay Green and Gold Professor of English at the University of Vermont. She holds a BA and PhD in American Studies from Yale University. Her research focuses on African American literature, autobiographical prose, and cultural studies. Bernard has published extensively in prestigious journals including The New Yorker, Harper's, and The American Scholar. She authored 'Remember Me to Harlem: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten' (a New York Times Notable Book) and 'Black Is the Body: Stories from My Grandmother's Time, My Mother's Time, and Mine' (winner of the 2020 LA Times Isherwood Prize).
She has received numerous fellowships including from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Vermont Arts Council, and MacDowell Colony. A 2020 Andrew Carnegie Fellow, Bernard contributes as an editor at The American Scholar and has served as Visiting Writer in Creative Nonfiction at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
