Émilien Ruiz is an Assistant Professor in digital history at Sciences Po Paris (Department of History / Centre for History). He is on secondment from the University of Lille (IRHiS) since joining Sciences Po in 2018. His research examines the interplay between knowledge production and political power, focusing on quantification practices, bureaucratic evolution, and digital historiography.
His work bridges historical analysis with public administration studies, emphasizing the role of statistics in governance. He advocates for a "reconstructionist" approach to quantitative data, arguing for its relevance in understanding modern statecraft. Ruiz has contributed extensively to journals like Histoire et mesure and collaborates with scholars such as Olivier Borraz.
Ruiz coordinates interdisciplinary projects including AGLOS (Global Approaches to Statistics), MECANHiST (Pedagogical Innovation), and E-NUMHiST (Digital History Education). He co-teaches seminars on administrative history at EHESS and leads undergraduate courses on state evolution at the University of Lille. His research also explores the impact of digital tools on historical scholarship.
- Education: PhD in History (2013)
- Collective Projects: AGLOS, MECANHiST, E-NUMHiST
Ruiz’s recent publications analyze the quantification of civil service across national contexts, reconstructing administrative logics through statistical debates. His digital history pedagogy and research blogs (The historians' toolbox, Becoming a historian) further contextualize his contributions to the field.
