Emelie Peine is a Professor and Director of International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound. Her research examines multinational agribusiness’s role in global food systems, focusing on China’s overseas farmland acquisitions, Brazilian soybean industries, and local food economies. She led a Northwest course on local food impacts and conducted Fulbright-funded research on Chinese investment in Brazil’s soy sector. Her work explores food sovereignty, supply chain control, and environmental impacts in Brazil.
Education: BA (The Evergreen State College, 1998), MS (Cornell University, 2002), PhD (Cornell University, 2009). Courses taught include Intro to Global Development, Global Food Systems, and Brazil-China relations. She contributed to policy discussions via workshops with U.S. and Latin American stakeholders and media engagements with NPR and CNBC.
Key awards include Fulbright Scholar (2012–13). Research emphasizes commodity complexes, global food regimes, and the intersection of agribusiness with political and ecological systems.
