Emanuela Keller serves as Professor ad personam for Neurointensive Care Medicine at the University of Zurich's Faculty of Medicine since February 1, 2014, holding an Extraordinary Professorship. Previously appointed Adjunct Professor in 2011, she integrates clinical practice, research, and teaching within academic medicine.
Her academic foundation includes:
- 1982-1988: Medical Studies at University of Zurich
- 1989: Dissertation at Physiological Institute, University of Zurich
- 1989-1996: Research Fellowships in London and Heidelberg
- 2004: Habilitation at University of Zurich
Keller's research centers on neurointensive care medicine with emphasis on pathophysiological mechanisms in critical neurological conditions. Mentored by Prof. Dr. EA Koller during her doctoral work, she maintains strong clinical-research synergies while advocating for structured research immersion periods. Her work bridges bedside neurocritical care with translational investigation.
As an academic leader, she actively promotes junior researchers—particularly women—by facilitating research time away from clinical duties, supporting publication efforts, and advising career development. She emphasizes that sustainable academic medicine requires dedicated research blocks and highly skilled collaborative teams to manage clinical-research-teaching triad pressures.
Keller attributes her professional resilience to perseverance, crediting Prof. Dr. Edith Schmid (Cardiac Anesthesiology, UZH) as a key female role model. Her institutional impact focuses on creating research pathways within demanding clinical environments through strategic staffing and protected scholarly time.
