Lara Prisco

Lara Prisco is a Consultant Neuroanaesthetist and Neurointensivist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN), University of Oxford. She serves as Research Lead for Neurointensive Care within Oxford NeuroCritical Care Research at the OUH NHS Foundation Trust and holds a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship. Dr. Prisco is also the Oxford Principal Investigator for the TBI-REPORTER Experimental Medicine Network and an elected Council member of the NeuroAnaesthesia and Critical Care Society of UK and Ireland.

Dr. Prisco completed her medical degree in 2007 and specialized in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, and Hyperbaric Medicine in 2012 at the University of Trieste, Italy. She earned an MSc in Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine in 2013 from the Catholic University in Rome and completed advanced training in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurointensive Care Medicine at prestigious institutions including the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH London) and Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge). In 2024, she completed a Master in Public Health (MPH) at the University of Glasgow focusing on sport-related concussion epidemiology.

Her research focuses on neurocritical care, traumatic brain injury, and disorders of consciousness, with particular expertise in Critical Care Electroencephalography (CCCEEG). Dr. Prisco explores electrophysiological signatures of neurological recovery and has contributed to establishing common data elements for disorders of consciousness research. She collaborates with the Podium Institute for Sports Medicine and Technology on sport-related concussion research and is involved with multiple Oxford research groups including the Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Research Group and the Epilepsy Research Group.

Dr. Prisco has received competitive fellowships including training at the European Astronaut Centre (ESA), Utrecht University (Brain Plasticity), and Harvard Medical School (International Bioethics). She was elected National UK Council Representative of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in 2023 and has contributed to numerous multi-center studies and clinical guidelines in neurocritical care.

Her scientific contributions include leadership in developing standardized approaches for disorders of consciousness research and investigating treatments for intracranial hypertension in brain-injured patients. Dr. Prisco actively mentors within the neurocritical care field and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of researchers across neuroscience, neuroimaging, and clinical neurology.

Dr. Prisco maintains active roles in professional societies and contributes to advancing clinical practice through guideline development and translational research. Her work bridges clinical neurocritical care with innovative research methodologies to improve outcomes for patients with acute brain injuries and disorders of consciousness.
