Elvis Nshom

Elvis Nshom, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor of Communication with a focus on Peace and Conflict Studies in the Department of Communication & Media Studies at California State University San Marcos, part of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral & Social Sciences (CHABSS). He brings extensive international experience from academic positions in Finland, Cameroon, and Russia to his current role in the United States.

Dr. Nshom earned his educational credentials through a diverse international journey: BA in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Buea, Cameroon (2009); MA in Cultural Diversity from the University of Eastern Finland (2012); Doctorate in Intercultural Communication from the University of Jyväskylä (2017); and a Post Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education from Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (2021).

His research centers on understanding intergroup relations, particularly examining prejudice toward marginalized groups and how communication functions within contexts of difference. Dr. Nshom employs mixed-method approaches to investigate conflict dynamics between majority and minority groups, with special focus on immigrant integration challenges. His work spans multiple continents, examining Finnish-immigrant relations, Cameroonian-Nigerian dynamics, and Sino-Cameroonian interactions.

Dr. Nshom's publication portfolio demonstrates consistent scholarly output in high-impact journals including the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. Dr. Nshom leads the 'Finnish-Immigrant Mutual Relations' research project and serves as Chair of the communication section of the World Social Science Association starting in the 2022-2023 academic year.
