Elvira Cicognani is a Full Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Bologna's Department of Psychology 'Renzo Canestrari', where she also serves as Department Head. She specializes in civic and political participation, community psychology, and youth citizenship development. Her current Horizon Europe project SINCRONY (2024-2027) focuses on intersectional inclusion in youth deliberation and participation. Previously, she led the EU-funded CATCH-EyoU project (2015-2018).
Educated at the University of Bologna (Bachelor, 1986), University of Wisconsin-Madison (Teaching Assistantship, 1987–1988), and University of Sussex (Erasmus, 1989), she completed her PhD in Social Psychology at the University of Padua (1995). Her research bridges theory and practice through participatory action research methodologies.
Her work emphasizes school-based interventions to foster civic engagement, with notable contributions to understanding global citizenship, youth participation in EU contexts, and health promotion partnerships. She coordinates multidisciplinary teams in projects involving 9+ international partners, focusing on policy-relevant outcomes and impact assessments.
