Barker's research revolutionizes classical studies through digital spatial analysis, focusing on how ancient texts encode geographical knowledge. His work bridges Homeric literary criticism with cutting-edge digital tools, examining how places function as dynamic nodes in cultural networks rather than static map points. He pioneers methodologies for linking heterogeneous digital resources to reconstruct ancient spatial narratives through projects like Pelagios and Recogito.
His recent publications reveal a decisive shift toward practical digital infrastructure development, with 80% of his last 15 works centered on spatial annotation systems, linked open data frameworks, and GIS applications for classical texts. This reflects his leadership in transforming theoretical spatial humanities concepts into globally adopted research tools.
Award highlights include:
- Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship (2012-2013)
- Two University of Oxford Teaching Awards (2006, 2007)
- Junior Research Fellowship, Wolfson College Cambridge
Barker secures major grants from AHRC, Google Digital Humanities, JISC, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, directing collaborative projects that integrate computer scientists, classicists, and librarians. He actively mentors through the OU's researcher development program and contributes to OpenLearn's public-facing educational content. His Pelagios Network coordinates international teams across 30+ countries to build interoperable digital infrastructure for ancient world studies.
