Dr. Henry Spelman is Assistant Professor in Classics at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Classics and Fellow of Christ's College. He completed his education as a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford. His academic journey includes previous positions as W.H.D. Rouse Junior Research Fellow at Christ's College and Leventis Research Fellow in Ancient Greek at Merton College, Oxford.
His research focuses primarily on early Greek literature and the broader ancient world, with expertise spanning Greek and Latin literature. Specific interests include archaic lyric poetry (especially Pindar and Alcaeus), Homeric epic, Old Comedy, literary reception, and textual transmission. He teaches most Greek literature options at Christ's College except the Greek novel.
Dr. Spelman's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on archaic and classical Greek poetry, with particular emphasis on intertextuality, performance contexts, and literary history. His work frequently examines Pindar, Homer, and comic fragments while exploring connections between genres. Recent articles show growing interest in reception studies and Hellenistic adaptations of earlier poetic traditions.
He has received prestigious academic honors including:
- Morehead-Cain Scholarship (UNC Chapel Hill)
- Rhodes Scholarship (Oxford)
- W.H.D. Rouse Junior Research Fellowship (Christ's College, Cambridge)
- Leventis Research Fellowship (Merton College, Oxford)
Dr. Spelman currently supervises PhD students and has secured Leverhulme Trust funding for research leave from October 2025 to October 2027. His future projects include studies on Pindar's reception and early Greek literary history.
