Prof. Ellen D. Renner holds a professorship in Translational Immunology in Environmental Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Medicine and Health. She leads research on molecular immunological links in human-environment interactions, focusing on rare congenital immune deficiencies as models for chronic lung diseases and allergies. Her work includes discovering DOCK8 deficiency (formerly autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome) and developing therapeutic approaches like gene repair and cell replacement therapy at the Helmholtz Zentrum München.
Education & Career:
- Studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU)
- Specialized in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital
- Board-certified immunologist (German Society for Immunology)
- Prior clinical/scientific roles at Hôpital Necker (Paris), Children's Hospital Seattle, and University of Washington
- Head of immunological diagnostics laboratory and DFG-funded research group at Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital
- Appointed to TUM Medical Faculty in 2016
Research Focus: Translational medicine bridging basic immunology and clinical application. Current projects include gene therapy for immune deficiencies and optimizing diagnostics/therapy for hyper-IgE syndromes, allergies, and chronic lung diseases.
Publications & Awards:
- Key publications include groundbreaking studies on STAT3 mutations and novel therapeutic approaches
- Holds awards such as the ST*AR Award (2007) and Merck Research Award (2003)
Clinical Work: Treats patients with rare congenital immunodeficiencies at TUM Children's Hospital Schwabing, specializing in hyper-IgE syndromes, allergies, and chronic lung diseases.
Labs & Collaborations: Active at Helmholtz Zentrum München and collaborates internationally in immunology research networks.
