Prof. Carsten B. Schmidt-Weber is a full professor of Molecular Allergology at TUM, leading the Center for Allergy and Environment (ZAUM) since 2010. His work bridges basic and applied research, focusing on immunological mechanisms underlying allergies, asthma, and environmentally induced diseases. ZAUM collaborates with Helmholtz Zentrum München and leads EU consortia, generating significant third-party funding and patents.
Education: Studied Biochemistry/Immunology in Darmstadt/Erlangen. Postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma. Habilitation in Davos, followed by roles at Imperial College London before joining TUM.
Research Interests:
- Mucosal host defense mechanisms
- Type 2 immunity regulation
- Allergen-specific immunotherapy
- Epithelial interface biology
- Environmental triggers (pollen, pollutants)
- SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis
Awards: EAACI Allergopharma Prize (2007), Curt Dehner Prize (2004). Spin-off companies established to commercialize diagnostic tools and therapies.
Grants/Advising: Over €40M in third-party funding. Advises healthcare institutions, governments (pollen risk assessments), and pharmaceutical companies. Trained numerous academic and industry professionals.
Labs/Teams: ZAUM integrates immunology, molecular biology, and environmental science. Collaborates with German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and European research networks.
