Prof. Dr. Carsten B. Schmidt-Weber serves as Director of the Institute of Allergy Research at Helmholtz Munich and Chair of the Center of Allergy and Environment (ZAUM) at Technical University of Munich since 2010. As Professor of Molecular Allergology, he leads research on immune mechanisms at body surfaces with emphasis on environmental allergen responses and tolerance restoration strategies.
His academic journey includes biochemistry and immunology studies in Darmstadt and Erlangen, followed by research at Harvard Medical School, Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (Davos), University of Zurich (habilitation), and Imperial College London (2007-2010).
Research focuses on T Cell Biology, Airway Epithelial Cells, Allergen-Specific Immunotherapy, and mRNA-Based Immunotherapy. His work investigates epithelial-immune communication to develop tolerance-restoring therapies against the allergy epidemic, with particular attention to barrier function and immunomodulation mechanisms.
Recent publications (2025) reveal trends in macrophage activation pathways in respiratory disease and advanced IgE/IgG4 profiling for venom immunotherapy, demonstrating his lab's shift toward molecular diagnostics and cellular mechanisms in allergic inflammation.
Key recognitions include:
- Oscar Gans Förderpreis (2015)
- Prize of the European Academy for Allergy and Asthma Research (2007)
- Curt-Dehner-Prize (2004)
He directs the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) consortium and leads multiple EU-funded projects plus nationally collaborative research initiatives. His institute investigates epithelial barrier dysfunction and develops novel immunotherapies, including mRNA vaccine platforms for allergic diseases.
