Elizabeth M. Pettinaroli is an Associate Professor and Chair of Latin American and Latinx Studies at Rhodes College, with affiliations in Modern Languages and Literatures, Spanish Studies, Urban Studies, and Environmental Studies and Sciences. Her research focuses on environmental humanities, spatial studies, and Latin American/ Latinx cultural production. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College.
Her work examines ecological violence through literature, film, and visual arts, particularly 'slow violence' (as defined by Rob Nixon). Key projects include editing Ecofictions, Ecorealities, and Slow Violence in Latin America and the Latinx World (2020) and Troubled Waters: Rivers in Latin American Imagination (2013). She co-founded Memphis Cartonera, an eco-conscious cooperative press, and serves on the Institute for Health Equity and Community Justice's board, promoting equity in healthcare education.
Publications span 18th-century colonial texts to contemporary Latinx environmental narratives. Recent work emphasizes decolonial methodologies and the intersections of ecology with cultural activism. Her scholarship bridges literary analysis with engaged pedagogy, addressing global environmental crises through humanities perspectives.
